To make a choice, you must first understand the different types of stand up paddle boards or SUP, for short. Different types comes with different functions. That is why it is very important to know them.

Surfing SUP, as its name speaks for itself, is solely for surfing. Its narrow, light, and short body structure makes its stability lower compared to other types. Thus, it is very ideal for high performance turns and ocean wave riding but not ideal for long distance paddling.

The second one is the touring SUP. It has been commonly used by paddlers since it has been made to serve almost all purposes. Because of being much wider, heavier, and has greater volume, it is much more stable compared to the first one. It is great for first timers who want to paddle in a lake.

The last type is no other than the inflatable. Some paddlers rent a room or space in apartments or have cars or vehicles that are used transport large boards. Sometimes, they can be a hassle since they take up space. If you are one of those people, this SUP will make a perfect sense for you. They are much lighter and more convenient. However, you have to endure the stiffness of a regular board, making paddling in a river challenging but manageable in light conditions.

After knowing the type, consider the body or hull type. This can help you determine how it functions in the water or how it is used. It depends on what activity or sport you are going to do. As to choosing between inflatable or solid, the storage and portability must be taken into consideration.

To ensure of a stable and safe paddling, surfing or wave riding, consider your height and weight and make sure that these are just right for the SUP of your choice. For better performance, do not take the dimensions like thickness, width, and length for granted. After that, you can also have the option to check out the best fins and accessories for it.
