Real Life Heroines From Female Adventurer Stories

By Richard Fisher

Reading about male heroes in works of literature is nothing uncommon. In fact, most novels, plays, poems, and other works regale audiences with the adventures of a man who overcomes obstacles at all odds. Any women in the story are usually back up characters or relegated to playing the quintessential damsel in distress. It can be difficult for girls today to imagine any scenario in which a woman triumphs and becomes the hero instead. Rather than rely on fiction, girls today could get the inspiration they need by looking to real life female adventurer stories.

An example of a modern heroine would be Amelia Earhardt. She of course is known best for being the first woman to fly around the world. Growing up in small town Abilene, Kansas, Earhardt never looked the part of an adventurist. However, she had the guts to take on the challenge of flying around the world when few others dreamed of doing so.

As skilled and confident as she was about flying, she was not able to escape fate, however. As her story is well-known, people today realize this particular female hero did not make it back from her doomed last trip. Historians continue to theorize about what happened to her. The theories range from her being taken captive by the Japanese to her dying in a fiery crash in the ocean.

Another feminine hero admired by fans of literature today is Laura Ingalls Wilder. Wilder is best known as the author of the Little House series. The books were probably ghost written by her daughter Rose Wilder Lane. Nonetheless, Wilder remains a much loved literary figure for many girls and women today.

Wilder is well regarded as a resilient, strong, and uncomplaining heroine in her novels. Each one goes into some detail about the various challenges she and her family faced together. They overcame struggles like nearly starving to death in a particularly hard winter, losing loved ones to premature death, and paying off crippling debts. The entire family worked together to overcome these problems.

Her example goes to show that sometimes life is not fair and may even feel like it is not worth living. Even so, girls can find it within themselves to forge on like Wilder did. They eventually will come to a brighter spot and be better for all of the lessons they learned from struggles. They can adopt the spirit that Wilder took on in life.

Having feminine heroes for girls to look up to and admire can be important in their formation as whole people. Parents, teachers, and others do not want them to grow up thinking that men are the only ones who can triumph in life. Women heroes show girls they too can win in life with the right attitude.

Female adventurers are few and far between in modern literature. As such, girls today have to look to real life protagonists who actually lived out lives of thrills and adventures. Women like Earhardt and Wilder provide examples for young girls to look up to today. Their stories highlight how to be strong and resilient in the face of challenges and adversity.
