Lobster Hoopnetting Is About Getting More Fun Out Of Life

By Jessica Williams

Aficionados prize fishing off the southern coast of California. The locality is also home to some of the tastiest seafood delicacies. For sport fishermen who are bored of wading on the beach or going on fishing cruises for big fish, there is another way to test their mettle in catching elusive denizens of the deep.

Those local people and other sports fishing enthusiasts from all over the country know lobsters by an affectionate name. People in the know use the word bugs for them, what with their spines and carapaces. They are ubiquitous, especially at night, and night lobster hoopnetting Catalina is probably part of the local magic that folks enjoy the most.

However, unlike in the days before stricter fisheries regulations, state statutes says that catching a lobster below a certain length is illegal. The minimum is for a lobster carapace that is three and one fourth inches long. The bugs are then considered mature and catchable, just like the legal age for young people.

There are charter cruises available just for hoopnetting activities alone. These can be turned into a combination of any kind of sport fishing activity, depending on the client. But true enthusiasts will not mix the pure joy of getting lobsters with other, more mundane tasks. These charters can be done in daytime or nighttime, with perhaps additional diving equipment for those who prefer getting their spiny crustaceans by diving for them.

Hoop nets are a traditional way of getting lobsters, and they are very flexible even in places that may not seem easy. When diving, it is harder to reach the lobsters in the kelp or holes around the area. But when working with a cruiser that has a pulley and some davits, the work becomes easier with the bugs.

Preparing a delicious meal from lobsters is perhaps the most heard of reasons for people going out on cruises. But then, they are truly there for the things that a cruise gives them, which are ocean breezes, and to die for views of the coast at night. The sport becomes even more enjoyable with less effort but with an abundance of healthy activity, natural wonders and perhaps romance.

Nowadays, commercial lobster catches are kept at a minimum or a farther distance from Catalina Island and neighboring shores. Commercial concerns go deeper and farther into oceans or other coastlines. Unregulated catching have decimated lobster and crab numbers on the southern California coast, so that only recreational catches are all that are allowed and doable.

Those who want in to this recreation need only a minimum of training, or not at all. A great charter outfit has the all licenses as well as equipment to get you the best tasting bugs around, all in legal size. A great feast awaits those who are lucky or patient, or even skilled enough.

Going after lobsters also does not require as much effort as when catching a big tuna, for example. It does not need long hours of waiting and running around in circles on the ocean. Dip as many hoop nets into the sea as can be done, and simply wait for the bugs to be pulled up.
