By Sharon Howard

There is no better way to explore a new place than to take a guided trip within it. For the best experience during your holiday, you should think of hoping onto one of the many guided Atlanta city bus tours. There are many historical places, galleries and shopping areas to explore and keep busy with all day long.

On average, the bus tours offered by majority of the tour agencies around last 5 hours. There are several routes that may be taken, with most trips centered on historical sites and buildings. Some agencies also like to drive tourists by the homes of well known actors, musicians, and business leaders.

Once you pay, make sure you get the correct information on departure time and pickup location. It would also be prudent to remember that your payment may not cater for the charges of meals and access to certain places. As such, ensure you have some extra cash to spend.

The buses usually make routine stops to allow those on board some time to relieve themselves when pressed. If you wish to spend more time at a specific area of interest, for instance the CNN Center, you will be allowed to end your trip at that spot as the rest of the group continues. However, only do so if you are a little bit familiar with the city.

There are numerous places to explore. While the normal duration for an unguided trip is 5 days, it may take as little as 5 or 6 hours to cover all the interesting sites on a bus tour. One thing your trip should cover is the history of the African American population of Atlanta.

By exploring the black history of the area, you will get to know how instrumental the civil rights movement was in the realization of race equality. One spot that offers tons of insight into this is the Martin Luther King Jr Center. Started in 1968, it is quite insightful on the legacy left by Dr. King upon his death. Its historians are pretty knowledgeable about his history and his struggle for equality through peaceful protests.

The Fox Theater is a historic site to explore. Constructed in 1929 as a temple, its storied history has seen it morph into a prime theatrical venue. Today, it hosts a regular stream of Broadway shows, rock concerts and operas. If you are lucky, you may arrive in time for a good performance.

The Swan House is another notable site. The building has been used to film movies on numerous occasions, the latest flick being the popular Hunger Games film. It arguably is the most photographed building in the whole city. It was built in 1928 and has a classic style. Its first inhabitants were the Edward H. Inman family.

A trip to the Atlantic Station should be the highlight of your visit. The location is a haven for shoppers. It houses well known outlets such as Banana Republic, IKEA, Victorias Secret and Gap. It has restaurants and an IMAX theater as well.
