Learn The Facts On Aircraft Upholstery

By Carl Snyder

Almost all transport means have seats and other fabric materials included in them. These materials make the travellers feel more comfortable especially while travelling over long distances. The idea of covering some parts of an aircraft with clothes and fabric materials cannot be underestimated because without them, flying on a plane can almost be impossible. Aircraft upholstery is the materials that cover seats and some parts of the plane.

The materials are very useful in improving the beauty of the plane and making passengers safe while travelling. All the seats on the plane are usually covered with soft materials so that people sitting on them do not feel the hardness of the construction material. Passengers, therefore, can travel long distances without sitting difficulties especially since most flights can take hours before one reaches their destination.

The fabrics on the walls and the floor of a plane play a very crucial role. Most of them are light in weight. This property contributes to reducing the density of the plane. Besides, they cover the metallic parts making the inside part look beautiful. The materials also prevent passengers from being in contact with the metals used in construction thereby enhancing safety as they reduce sudden impacts.

While landing or taking off, it is usually required that passengers stay firmly on the seats. For the seats to properly cushion their occupants, they have to be made of high density foams. The inner part of the seat should consist of a rigid material which is bonded to a soft material on the surface. The outside part is usually covered by leather, vinyl or nylon fabric.

While travelling, all passengers always hope for a comfortable and a safe journey. To address this, the walls and bulkheads of all planes are covered with these materials. Apart from reducing the noise produced by the engine, the walls are covered by flame retarding foams which are covered by different materials depending on the type of plane. For expensive private jets, the outer cover is usually leather while formulated fabrics which offer low toxicity to flames are used in commercial airplanes.

The carpets used for floors should be chosen wisely. Factories manufacture a broad range of carpets which are specifically designed for aeroplane use. Whether made of wool or nylon, the carpets should have lightweight to reduce the amount of fuel consumed. Also, they should be durable and comfortable underfoot as well as satisfying the industry approved standards for safety and flame resistance.

For the interior parts of a helicopter, factors such as the ratio of weight to fuel consumption, flame resistance and comfort must be put into consideration while laying the fabric materials. In this case, the fabrics have to meet the standard burn test, heat release and smoke toxicity resistance.

From the above discussion, it is clearly evident that these materials are very useful in the construction of aircraft. They make travelling very enjoyable and safe. By making the plane light, they reduce fuel consumption thereby reducing the cost of transport. It is, therefore, necessary for the manufacturers to choose correct types of material during the construction process.
