Discovering The Blue Ridge Parkway Bed And Breakfast

By Betty Jackson

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a historic roadway in the United States. Often considered one of the most scenic roadways in America, it is also part of Great Smokey Mountains and Shenandoah National park systems. Connecting the Great Smokey Mountains to Shenandoah National Park, it is considered a main thoroughfare through the park. When looking for lodging, the Blue Ridge Parkway Bed And Breakfast is often considered one of the best places to stay in the area.

A drive on the scenic parkway is an incredible journey along the ridge of a mountain. Whereas, when it comes to hiking, there are a number of trail heads located along the roadway. As such, whether serious hiker, or driver wanting to take a break, the many trail heads offer an opportunity to see the area on foot. Whether taking the parkway, or a trip on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, travelers will see some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States.

The National roadway has often been the most visited in the United State since 1946. The National Park Service owns and maintains the parkway and other roads in the area. Whereas, a lot of the property along the side of the road belongs to the National Forest Service. As such, there is also free camping available in many areas of the forest. As a dedication to the beauty of the area, the U. S. Quarter was dedicated to North Carolina in 2015.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was responsible for building the roadway and a number of other National parks in the United States. Originally known as the Appalachian Scenic Highway, the name was latter changed. The construction was mostly completed by a number of contract employees working under the guidance of the federal government.

In 1935, construction began on the highway. After which, in 1936, Congress authorized the project and change the name to its current inception. At that time, additional construction projects began on the park as well as the roadway and trails. It was also at this time the road was dedicated as a National parkway.

While the parkway is quite beautiful, the history behind the development is mixed. For, while the construction project created a number of new jobs, there were also many residents whom lost homes and land during the process. In addition, commercial travel was rerouted to back and side roads, thus taking longer to make scheduled deliveries. In addition, there was a Cherokee Indian Reservation along the route which was also impacted by construction of the roadway.

During the building process and after, residents were no longer able to build on lands without permission or farm new land for agricultural use. In fact, commercial vehicles were not permitted to use the parkway and had to use side roads, thus making deliveries far more difficult. As such, even with new jobs, the economic trends in the area took a down turn.

While there may have been people displaced, deliveries delayed and other issues, there is now a beautiful roadway and park as a result. As such, travelers need to realize the sacrifices which were made during the establishment of these and other National parks. For, while the parks offer a great deal of fun, it is important to remember and give thanks to all those whom made such beautiful scenery and fun possible.
