Enjoy Vegan Festivals Around The Country

By Larry Allen

For those who choose to eat no animal foods - even in trace amounts - it's important to learn what prepared foods are available. These specialty foods are produced by committed manufacturers who respect the dietary choice people have made. It's also fun to learn about new foods or new recipes. For this kind of education, few things are better or more fun than vegan festivals.

A 'vegan' diet is one that contains no meat, dairy, seafood, or animal fats like fish oils. This means no omelets, yogurts or sour cream, butter, or sushi. It is also necessary to carefully read labels and investigate things like food additives, flavorings, and sauces. Getting adequate amounts of complete proteins, which most people obtain from meat or dairy products, is difficult but important for optimum health.

It's often a moral decision to follow this kind of diet. People may feel that they have no right to exploit animals for their own purposes. Others may just not enjoy the taste of milk, have allergies to dairy or shellfish, or choose to eat only what they grow in their own gardens. There are many reasons to be one of the growing number of vegans, but that doesn't mean that you have to give up good food.

Imagine going to a festival, complete with live entertainment and many vendors offering gourmet foods, where there is nothing - nothing - that you can't eat. No need to worry that temptation will overtake you and cause you to violate your principles. Every single thing will be purely vegetable in origin. Moreover, vendors wanting to show off their wares will bring out the most tasty and memorable things they offer.

No matter how you eat, festivals like this are great ways to learn about foods you may be unfamiliar with, to try before you buy, and to sample new recipes. Most of us are looking for a few new ideas to tempt our families, make dinnertime fun again, or impress our friends. It's a great and inexpensive way to see what new products are coming to the market.

Everyone knows foods they like that are completely vegetarian. A French baguette is made of flour, water, yeast, and salt, as are many hearty whole-grain breads. A great salad has lettuces, seeds, nuts, and fruits; who needs anything more? There are cakes without eggs, creamy sauces without cream, and delicious sautes made without butter. Find a festival in your area, or one worth traveling to, and see how exciting meals can be.

New York City, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, and Austin have these popular festivals. Now, many other places are hosting these specialty food fairs, so check to see if your area is getting on board. If not, suggest to the city fathers that now is the time to cater to this way of eating.

Another nice thing about these food fairs is that you don't have to spend a lot of money on eating on site. Vendors give out lots of samples, and it's possible that you can eat for free. However, there will be many good things to carry home, so save the grocery money so you can stock up for all you'll want to buy.
