By Mary Harris

If there is any reason why you should pay North Dakota a visit soon, it is its many spectacular lakes, rugged topography and sprawling woodlands. It is also renowned for its distinct history, just as several other American states are. You stand to learn a great deal with a visit to its numerous museums and heritage sites. Here are some of the most popular North Dakota tourist attractions.

The most famous tourist location in the state is the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It plays host to the highly famous Little Missouri River which courses along the plains and past the hills in the park. For a large part of the year, the location teems with hikers and campers. If you only get to watch bison on TV, it may be time to travel and see them firsthand in their natural habitat.

Another top attraction is the National Buffalo Museum. The site can be easily spotted from afar thanks to the large concrete bison monuments within it. The grounds are also home to a rare albino bison. The museum provides loads of valuable information about the history of bison and buffalo in America. Visitor traffic is always highest in the months of summer.

Many people know the state for its history with Native Americans. A short trip to the Knife River Indian Villages should be enough to fill you with knowledge about the local history. The grounds also favor a host of recreational activities. After touring the museum, you may explore the several trails that are part of the sprawling landscape.

It would also be a good idea to check out the North Dakota Heritage Center. It perfectly chronicles the local history, from ancient times to what it is today. The museum features an array of exhibits and artifacts in four galleries. One exhibit that always draws stares of admiration from visitors is a T REX skeleton. A cafe that serves an assortment of refreshments sits close by. The outdoor areas are full of hiking trails too.

If you are a great lover of American political history, you should visit Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. It is a site that features reconstructed buildings from the civil war era. In whole, the site gives an account of the local military history as well as the history of the Native Americans in the area. Its many trails are a favorite among bikers, horseback rides and hikers. There is a campground that features modern amenities on site too.

The largest lake locally is Lake Sakakawea. Its shoreline runs from more than 1500 miles. The lake is popularly used for kayaking, motor boating and sailing. It is also home to a diverse range of fish species throughout the year. Most tourists love to travel in RVs so they can camp at the several modern campgrounds on site. Some local shops also offer boat rentals.

You do not need to contact a travel agency to plan your trip for you. The sites are easy to locate and the payments are pretty straightforward. Just ensure you pack all the necessary supplies and work with a favorable budget.
